Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana, Inc.

Epilepsy is the most common serious brain disease worldwide. 1 in 26 Americans will develop epilepsy within their lifetime. Over 3.4 million Americans and 174,000 Kentuckians will live with this neurological condition. In 1993, t he Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana (EF Kentuckiana) began as a grassroots organization from in the steadfast love and devotion two mothers had for their young daughters with epilepsy. Their passion was fueled by an unwavering commitment to help other families impacted by epilepsy. Over the years, the EF Kentuckiana has worked tirelessly to improve and save lives through its community services, public education, advocacy and access-to-care campaign, and research initiatives. There are many different seizure types and syndromes and referenced as the epilepsies, which affect children and men and women of all ages, races, and ethnic groups. Anyone with a brain can have a seizure.

Unfortunately, epilepsy remains a very feared and misunderstood neurological disease despite the many medical advancements and ongoing efforts to dispel the myths and misconceptions that still exist today. Our efforts to serve and support those impacted has never wavered, and our mission is bold - to improve the lives of people affected by epilepsy through education, advocacy, research, and connection.

To move closer to accomplishing our goals, we need you to join in this fight! Your heartfelt donation will move us closer to a world free from epilepsy and free from fear of the next seizure. Thank YOU in advance for helping the EF Kentuckiana work toward a world without seizures and an END to EPILEPSY!

Who We Are

Established in 1993, the Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana (EFKY) originally began as a grassroots organization. Today, the EFKY is a recognized and valued leader in the fight to END EPILEPSY! Did you know that epilepsy is the most common brain disease worldwide? The EFKY is dedicated to providing HELP, HOPE, AND SUPPORT to the over 153,000 children, adults, and veterans, many of whom live with debilitating and life-threatening seizures, throughout Kentucky and southern Indiana. Our efforts to serve those in need has never wavered, and our mission is bold - to lead the fight to overcome the challenges of living with epilepsy and to accelerate therapies to stop seizures, find cures, and save lives. To move closer to accomplishing our goals, WE NEED YOU TO JOIN IN THIS FIGHT!

Today, one in 26 Americans will fall victim to epilepsy. The EFKY is honored to provide vital education, advocacy, outreach, and direct support services to help them in their battle to overcome heartbreaking challenges and devastating consequences, like sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), anxiety, depression, cognitive and memory issues, to improve quality of life. Over 40 different seizure types and syndromes are comprised of epilepsy. It, unfortunately, remains a very feared and misunderstood neurological disease - despite the many medical advancements and ongoing efforts to dispel the myths and misconceptions, that still exist today.

In 2018, the EFKY led the fight to bring epilepsy education into Kentucky's public schools with the Lyndsey Crunk Act, which mandates that schools be Seizure Smart! Since it's passing, the Lyndsey Crunk Act has now become a national campaign - and very proud that Indiana was the second state to pass Seizure Safe Schools legislation! Kentucky's legislation also mandates that each student with epilepsy have a seizure action plan in their school file. And that rescue medications, approved by the FDA, be administered as prescribed by their treating physician. No longer can schools refuse to administer life-saving medications to stop seizures! This was a HUGE win for the epilepsy community, and we are enormously proud to have led the charge on Seizure Smart Schools! We continue to work with schools throughout the state of Kentucky to certify teachers and assist parents in helping children have the best school experience possible.

Thank you in advance for helping the EFKY broaden its reach of HELP and HOPE throughout Kentucky and southern Indiana as we strive to END EPILEPSY!
